What does Embrace monitor?
Embrace is designed to monitor and alert for tonic clonic (convulsive) seizures and provide Embrace users with daily information on their activity and rest.
What will I need to get the Embrace to work?
- An Embrace watch
- A compatible smartphone/tablet with active bluetooth Low Energy and Internet connection
- Alert app
- Mate app
- Active Embrace subscription
How does the Embrace work?
Embrace needs to be paired with a compatible smartphone with Internet access and always stay within its bluetooth range. For the best experience, the phone must remain in close proximity to the individual wearing the Embrace (under ~10m or 30 feet). Only in this case will it be able to send alert calls/SMS to the active caregivers when Embrace detects a convulsive seizure.
Embrace records physiological signals with its sensors (an EDA sensor, a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a peripheral temperature sensor). Read more on Embrace Technology Page.
How does the Alert system work?
Embrace sends data to the paired smartphone via bluetooth, and from the smartphone to Empatica’s servers via Internet connection. When Embrace detects an unusual event, like a convulsive seizure it will send Alert calls and SMS to the caregiver’s phones.
Remember: Embrace watch will not be able to send alert calls/SMS to the active caregivers if Embrace isn’t connected to the paired smartphone via bluetooth and if the smartphone has no access to Internet. Both bluetooth and Internet connection are necessary for the Alert calls to be sent when Embrace detects an unusual event, like a convulsive (tonic clonic) seizure.
What happens if Embrace isn’t connected to the paired smartphone via bluetooth?
Whenever bluetooth connection is unavailable, Embrace will continue recording data and store it on its internal memory. Embrace memory capacity is about 8-9 hours. If bluetooth connection isn’t restored after about 18 hours, Embrace’s memory will fill up. In the event that the memory becomes full, Embrace will continue to monitor and alert, however, new physiological signal data will not be recorded. This will mean that sleep and activity data will not be reported for periods of time when the memory is full.
As soon as the bluetooth connection is restored between Embrace and the paired smartphone, data will be automatically transferred to the smartphone, freeing Embrace memory. Data transfer might take up to 1 hour and a half.
What happens if the smartphone has no access to Internet?
If the paired smartphone has no access to Internet (remember, setting your mobile phone in in airplane mode disables internet connection) the data recorded by the Embrace watch will be stored in your smartphone.
