Empatica Manager for Windows (from version 0.9.4.325) will automatically check if there are firmware updates available for a connected E4.
The Firmware update process will start if the following conditions are met:
- You are logged into Empatica Manager V0.9.4.325 or higher.
- Empatica Manager has Firmware Updates checkbox enabled (see the section on Enabling / Disabling Firmware Updates below).
- Your PC is running Windows 7 or Windows 8.
- There is only 1 E4 device connected to your PC/tablet running Empatica Manager.
Empatica Manager will check for firmware updates as soon as an E4 is connected. The Manager checks your device's hardware version to determine if there are any updates available. If a firmware update is found you will see the Firmware Update dialog depicted below:
You can decide whether or not to proceed with an update. If you defer the update by selecting "no", the firmware update notification will be dismissed until the next time you connect your E4. If you chose to proceed by pressing "yes", the firmware update process will begin automatically after Empatica Manager downloads all stored sessions from the E4. Note that downloading data before the update can take up to 30 minutes. After data download, the update process consists of three automated steps that typically take less than five minutes to complete.
1) Updating the motherboard firmware
2) Rebooting the E4
3) Updating the BVP board
It is important to keep the device connected to the PC during the entire firmware update. If the connection is interrupted the firmware update process must be manually re-initiated and completed before the device can be used (see Troubleshooting section below).
At the end of the process, you'll see a confirmation message:
What can I do if the device is disconnected during a firmware update?
An interrupted firmware update may leave the E4 in a reset state (indicated by a constant white LED light). Follow these steps to recover the device:
- Unplug the device (if connected) from the PC.
- Close and then re-launch Empatica Manager
- Connect the E4 to the PC and wait for the following popup to be shown:
Press YES in order to re-initiate the firmware update process outlined above.
(if no popup is shown, please restart the app and plug in again the device).
Enabling / Disabling Firmware Updates:
Some situations involving home recording of data may call for researcher managed firmware updates. Firmware updates can be disabled in the Empatica Manager Preferences menu (click on the "gear" icon depicted below to bring up preferences)
